After an exhausting day at work, there’s nothing more relaxing than a good night’s rest. However, for this construction worker in China, his night won’t be complete without a trip to the subway station. So every night after work, the man patiently walks to the subway in Shanghai just to use the free public WIFI.
At this point you’re probably thinking: why go through all this hardship just for a free wifi? For this construction worker named Ge Yuanzheng, wifi is his only means of seeing his family, who is currently miles away from Shanghai.
The construction worker is one of the millions of migrant workers in China who left their hometown just to seek jobs in the city. Yuanzheng’s family is from Henan Province and internet is his only means of connecting with them every day.
After his backbreaking labor, the construction worker only earns around 200 to 300 Yuan or PHP 1,600 to PHP 2,400 every day.
This is barely enough to cover his daily expenses, so he tries very hard to save every penny he got to give to his family:
“I don’t want to spend money, but I miss home and want to talk to my family.”
This is the reason why instead of buying a subscription to the internet, he chose to walk every night to the subway station to connect to the free WIFI there.
One night, a pedestrian spotted him talking on the phone and decided to snap a photo of him.
It did not take long before the construction worker’s inspirational story spread on social media. The news about him reached his wife, who has no idea of the sacrifices he makes just to talk with them.
